Well, this is certainly one of the more interesting animations I've seen. Nice original score, and an example of what you can do with simple GIF animations. It's like a time machine back to 1965. From the animator: "I'm committed to speaking out for peace. My art is my voice. I'm self-taught. If a picture says 1,000 words, I can think of nothing more important for those words to convey than World Peace." Think you can do better? Submit your work to the Animation Showcase.

It's taken a while, but I've gotten used to the toolbar layout for Flash CS3 and CS4 - but for when I'm getting nostalgic, it's not too difficult to switch the toolbar layout between single-column and dual-column. Or, you know, switch it back if you change your mind. It's up to you.

Maybe I'm fussy and old-fashioned, but the amount of clutter in Flash drives me nuts. I love the program, I love the number of tools, I hate that there's nowhere to put all those tools without working on two monitors. But it's possible to tuck them away to where they're easily accessible by expanding and collapsing them to the dock, so they aren't quite such space hogs.

Recently a reader sent me a Flash file and begged me to help her troubleshoot it, because for some reason her animated GIFs were all coming out static. She tried a dozen things, but she didn't try the most simple thing: fixing the publishing settings. Don't laugh, because you know you've done it too. It's usually the simple things that elude us the most.

Why doesn't it play? Because animated GIFs and animated movie clips don't really get along in Flash.

Novice animators generally don't understand one basic fact on the outset: animations aren't drawn in perfectly ordered sequence. It's hard to really preserve motion and consistency that way. It doesn't take long to catch on to the process of keyframing and inbetweening, though - as well as why it's so important, and which one comes first.

Need that circle to have a perfect 125.64 pixel diameter? Does that symbol need to be centered at exactly 221 pixels from the left and 13 pixels from the top? It's a lot easier to do that using the Info Tab / Panel in Flash rather than trying to drag it around with your mouse and the Arrow Tool or Free Transform Tool.

I've never understood the phrase "There's more than one way to skin a cat," just because as a cat lover, the idea of skinning my feline friends horrifies me. Now if the saying was "there's more than one way to animate a symbol," I'd totally be able to get behind that - because there's quite a few ways, and I'm not just talking about the difference between shape tweens, motion tweens, and frame-by-frame drawn animation. You can also animate using ActionScripting, and various mathematical functions.
