hi-YA!

This cute little ninja was made from a pattern in Creepy Cute Crochet, just like the monkey in a fez. I made it for another a co-worker's birthday. Instead of making a card* for the ninja, I had everyone write their birthday message on a 2"x3" piece of card stock. Then I taped each one on a pin (the ones with the flat flower heads on them) and stuck the pin in the ninja.
He looked super hilarious with about 12 messages sticking out of him. Look at this macro shot! I love seeing all the details that I can't see with my own eyes. That felt is so cool looking. The shiny, deadly shuriken is a large silver sequin I cut with my cuticle scissors. The tie on his head is crocheted in the pattern, but I could not, for the life of me, figure out what the pattern said. Mine came out looking like a big knot of black yarn. The felt was much, much easier.
* I considered finding a photo of a dojo to print on card stock and use as a backdrop/card for the ninja ... but I ended up liking the pincushion idea better.

1000 Journals documentary
I've been excited about the forthcoming 1000 Journals documentary. In case you don't know about the 1000 Journals project and documentary, here's a synopsis:
1000 Journals is a film about people whose lives are touched by 1000 traveling journals. These blank journals were released into the world in the summer of 2000, by Someguy, a San Francisco based artist. Some people found a journal, or got it from a friend or stranger. Some signed up on the web and received it in the mail. Some wrote in them, others doodled, pasted in photographs, or added artworks. Some kept them. Some passed them on. There are no rules, and no one really monitors these journals and their movements. And yet, they are connecting tens of thousands of people worldwide, provoking and inspiring them.
In September 2003, one of the 1000, number 526, returned to Someguy, filled. What happened to the other 999? This film tells their stories. 1000 Journals shares the experience of their worldwide journeys, and chronicles the self-governed collaboration of thousands of random people who have added to this global "message in a bottle." Directed by Andrea Kreuzhage. USA. Running time: 88 mins.
"Someguy" was at the Bay Area Maker Faire. I never saw him, but I came back to the Maker's Notebook Modding Station in the Maker Shed after a break, opened up a notebook on the table, and like a visit from the Tooth Fairy or Santa Claus, a bunch of pages had been magically altered in my absence. Here are a few:
The 1000 Journals documentary will be running at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco from Aug. 1 - 7. Check the film's website for more upcoming screenings.

Delft ceramic style cross-stitch mantle clock

Lovely Delft ceramic style cross-stitch mantle clock. Bohus writes -
I've never been into ornate and elaborate clocks - and that's not just because I'm always late. Even though I'm clearly fond of crazy mechanical stuff, I've never really been a fan of Grandfather clocks for example. I've seen them most when awarded to alarmed frat boys on The Price Is Right, but even in person they just strike me as a just little too much.
Delftclock There's an unusual brand of white Delft porcelain clock that some folks have on their mantles. Delft porcelain is a Dutch specialty - blazing white porcelain with art brushed on in a deep blue. Clearly this is what the above craft project is meant to evoke... but in cross-stitch! This is such a weird collision of ideas that I just don't know how to feel.

Cactus Update - July

Oh, look at how big number 34 is getting! Some differences are starting to show up in the spikes of the cacti. This one's spikes are all white. Some have dark spikes along with the white.

And number 45 has *red* spikes. Right now they are all still basically all the same shape, but if the spikes are any indication, it seems as though we have a nice mix of cactus types.

The little puff of spikes in the dirt is number 3. He and number 85 died since last month. They just shriveled up one day. I suspect I was over watering, so I've cut back. To see a whole family photo with numbered notes, check out my Flickr.

Presentation on planning for a group of nine-year olds
From Cyburbian MacheteJames:
This Monday, I'm going to be doing a 5 minute talk on planning to a group of 4th graders. I've never done anything like this, and I know that 9 year olds aren't going to care about rezonings, facade easements, or stormwater retention policies. How can I make planning sound cool to a group of kids this age? I know it won't be as simple as saying "we decide where sidewalks go and where buildings are built" because the Mayor, DPW chief, and Park & Rec director will be there and I've gotta take them into consideration. I'm pretty sure most 9 year olds wouldn't have played SimCity (although I was a dork and did play it when I was a little older than these kids). Thanks.

Small town looking to create a downtown: any examples?
From Cyburbian fourthconchord: A small bedroom community of 10,000 population does not currently have a true downtown. There is no street level retail, though the town is not completely sprawled out. There is some light density as retail is about 30' off the road, houses are about 20' from the street. The city is in the process of defining a formal downtown centered around public buildings and some of the most active retail. Does anyone here know of any other towns that have done something similar? Does anyone have any experience or tips for a community trying to do this?

American Bar Association considering model land development act
From Cyburbian Whose Yur Planner: Got this via Law of the Land Blog. Wonder if they will include any planners?
Under the leadership of Edward J. Sullivan, immediate past chair of the ABA State and Local Government Law Section, and a member of the Portland, Oregon, firm of Garvey Schubert Barer, the State and Local Government Law Section and the Administrative Law Section created a joint task force to focus on developing fair procedures for the enactment and administration of land use regulations. This multi-year effort, with input from Association members and others in the field, has resulted in a proposed model act that will be the subject of discussion in August 2008 as the matter is reviewed by the ABA House of Delegates.

Rearranging
We've entered into a new phase with My ocean is never blue as we're getting ready for our semi-site specific performance on June 22 at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park, right along the Anacostia River. For this performance we've pulled the work completely apart and are restructuring it from the ground up. Two Fridays ago we went to the park to see what we could structure specifically for this space. We ended up working on a dock that goes about half way into the river. I had one idea that we tried (doing the Drench section) and then asked for suggestions from the dancers. We ended up creating a nice 10 minute section there on the dock that will serve as the beginning section of our performance.
One of the challenges with this project is bringing in material that is specific to the site - we already have alot of material from this project that we want to include, but I don't want to ignore where we are. We also want to not make it only about the river, but still keep the multi-faceted aspect of the work intact. So, bringing in more specifics about the Anacostia River and keep the larger, more general observations about water present. I'm not too worried about this, but it is an interesting balance to explore and, hopefully, find.

50 Liters a Day, honestly
Still struggling with our internet connection... but, here are the totals for the week that I was trying to only use 50 liters a day (they are the actual amounts, honestly)...
Day 1: 64
Day 2: 41
Day 3: 41.75
Day 4: 63.5
Day 5: 45.75
Day 6: 51.75
Day 7: 42
total: 349.75
round that up to 350, divide by 7 and you get an even 50 liters per day. So, its possible, but certainly difficult.

More Water Days
Well, I survived my days of a 50 liters limit pretty well. On Saturday, my last day of the water week, I took what was the most satisfying 4 minute shower of my life. After spending all week taking a 2 liter "bath", having water run down my body was so pleasing. As the week went on the most interesting aspect of the experiment was not figuring out how to use less water - that was interesting at first - but, it was the development of my awareness of water use. Each time I went to wash my hands, take a drink, or wash a dish, I would pause and make sure I really needed to do that action right then. Each time I began to ask, "can I wait alittle while before I use this water?". It became an interesting meditation of sorts. I'm still not exactly sure how I will incorporate this experience into the final work, but it will be interesting to continue to reflect and see how it effects my day-to-day life.

The Ins and Outs of Online Antique Appraisal -- click for full article
Call it online estimate or something. "Appraisal" means formally establishing a value and the best you can hope for would be an online estimate. A true antique appraisal is a legal document! Antique appraisal is an art and generally performed by an appraiser using "experience" and a "trained eye". So, to be fair, don't expect an appraiser (blinded in an electronic world) to be able to provide you with anything more than an estimate..... more
